How the Math Works

Rectangle perimeter = 2 × (length + width)
Open edge = perimeter − already restrained edge
Edging to buy = ceil(open edge × (1 + allowance) ÷ stock length)
Straight spikes = ceil(straight edge ÷ straight spacing)
Curve spikes = ceil(curved edge ÷ curve spacing)
Total spikes = straight spikes + curve spikes

The tool is intentionally transparent: the geometry, purchasing allowance and spike-spacing assumptions remain visible instead of being hidden inside one unexplained number.

How much paver edging do I need?

Calculate the perimeter, subtract the edges that are already restrained, add an allowance for cuts, then divide by the stock length of the edging and round up to whole sections.

Do I need paver edging against a house?

If the house foundation or another suitable fixed boundary is actually providing restraint, that edge can normally be excluded from the separate edging quantity. Confirm the site and product requirements before installation.

How many spikes do I need for paver edging?

Divide each edge type by its planned spike spacing and round up. This calculator keeps straight and curved runs separate because their spacing assumptions may differ.

What spike spacing should I use?

Use the manufacturer's installation instructions for the restraint product you are buying. The default values are editable planning inputs, not a universal installation standard.

Can I use this for a curved patio?

Yes. Enter the total open edge directly when the layout is irregular, then enter the portion that is curved so the curve can use its own spike spacing.
