How the Blocking Calculation Works

Bays per row = joist count − 1
Blocking pieces = (bays per row × blocking rows) + extra pieces
Block cut length = joist spacing − actual joist thickness
Required blocking length = blocking pieces × cut length
Purchase-planning length = required length × (1 + waste allowance)
Stock boards = ceil(purchase-planning length ÷ stock board length)

The arithmetic is a material-planning model. It does not determine whether blocking is structurally required, where it must be located, or which connection detail is permitted for a particular deck or floor system.

Understanding Joist Blocking Requirements

Blocking can serve different purposes in wood framing, including helping stabilize joists and transferring or resisting forces in specific configurations. The correct number and location of blocking pieces depend on the framing design, joist dimensions, span, loads, connections and applicable requirements.

For that reason, this calculator asks you to enter the number of blocking rows you intend to plan for rather than automatically declaring a universal code requirement. A published American Wood Council FAQ notes that lateral-stability blocking requirements can depend on the joist or rafter depth-to-width ratio, not simply whether spacing is 16 or 24 inches on center.

How many blocking pieces do I need between joists?

For a simple repeated row, the planning count is one piece between each adjacent joist pair. That is joist count minus one pieces per row, multiplied by the number of rows, plus any extra pieces you enter.

How long should joist blocking pieces be?

For this material model, cut length equals the entered on-center spacing minus the actual joist thickness. A 16 in spacing with 1.5 in thick joists produces a 14.5 in planning cut length.

Should blocking be the same depth as the joists?

Blocking dimensions and connection details should follow the framing design and applicable requirements. This calculator does not choose a structural block size; it uses spacing and actual joist thickness only to estimate the length of a block that fits between the joists.

Does 16 in or 24 in spacing determine blocking requirements?

Spacing changes the material calculation, but it does not by itself determine every structural blocking requirement. Requirements can depend on the framing system, member dimensions, loads and applicable guidance.

How do I calculate blocking lumber?

Multiply blocking pieces by the cut length to get required blocking length. Apply the waste allowance for a purchase-planning length, divide by the stock board length and round up to whole boards.

How many fasteners do I need for joist blocking?
